2010 ASELL Science Workshop - Adelaide

The first ASELL Science Workshop will be held on the 6th-9th of April 2010 at the University of Adelaide, which will involve the disciplines biology, chemistry and physics. Universities are invited to send 2-person teams (one academic and one student). This workshop will include a mixture of discussions and laboratory-based activities. Each team will be expected to showcase one experiment from its home institution. Up to 4 teams from each institution per discipline are allowed to attend and it has been suggested that institutions submit experiments are considered good and experiments or need major improvement. It is expected that there will be 20 experiments for each discipline at the workshop.

Teams will need to send documentation describing the experiment:

  1. Technical notes for laboratory staff
  2. Notes for the students doing the experimental exercise
  3. Notes for demonstrators, teaching the experiment
  4. OH&S notes
  5. Information about the intended teaching-and-learning objectives of the experiment will also be required in the form of sections 1 and 2 of the ASELL/ACELL educational template.

The cost of the workshop is AUD$715 (AUD$650 plus GST) per team. One team = one academic + one student. The “student” team member will be interpreted loosely: this person could be a senior undergraduate student, or even a research student. The workshop fee covers registration and food. Accommodation and cost of travel to/from Adelaide are not covered by the workshop fee.

A special program for Deans from Australian universities will also be run on 8 – 9 April 2010. The cost of the Deans’ workshop is AUD$250 (inc. GST). The workshop fee covers registration and food. Accommodation and cost of travel to/from Adelaide are not covered by the workshop fee.

See the draft workshop schedule for the full list of times and events.
